2026 Declared the Era of the Frog Game.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent developer-focused presentation was undoubtedly entertaining, my biggest takeaway was not the intended one: I am certain that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.
Exactly five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these leaping protagonists. Considering a band of frogs is termed an army, it appears they are staking their claim.
The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians
Croaking characters are far from new to the gaming landscape. From the arcade classic Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a niche presence. Yet, their popularity has seemingly surged in recent times.
A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam yields an absolute deluge of results. Although, some of these are obscure titles, a sizable number are legitimate amphibian adventures.
Charting the Croak Comeback
To understand this rise, I undertook a deep dive into the recent history of frog-related gaming on Steam. My criteria was based on clear indicators, counting games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.
The results reveal an unmistakable trend: a consistent increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.
This notable escalation prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The frog's growing prominence in the broader culture is partially visible elsewhere, such as the revival of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. Yet, the wave in gaming appears particularly strong.
Designing for a Sticky Tongue
Honestly, this is a movement I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs possess built-in design advantages for game developers.
- Unique Characters: They are ideally shaped to be designed as endearing characters that often become a standout feature in any game.
- Innovative Systems: Their stretchy limbs and sticky tongues enable a host of unique mechanics.
A number of the announced projects directly leverage these traits. For instance the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has officially commenced—and the potential for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the largest year for amphibian gaming.
When these games find success—and historically, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we might just be entering a genuine amphibian entertainment revival.
